Special Issue: Experience-Technology-Sustainability Nexus

Dear Colleagues, 

We are pleased to invite you to submit papers to the upcoming Finnish Journal of Tourism Research Special Issue titled “Experience-Technology-Sustainability Nexus”. 

The emergence of the Experience Economy, and its evolution into the Transformation Economy, marked a paradigmatic reconfiguration in the ways in which economic value is produced, consumed, and destroyed. This shift integrates insights from a multitude of theoretical domains to elucidate how and why meaningful, memorable, and potentially transformative experiences have become central to both contemporary life and business practice. 

In the past decade, sustainability and technological innovations have become two global issues of our time. The convergence of technological innovation with pressing sustainability imperatives has fundamentally reshaped the tourism industry. These domains now function as critical arenas where the dynamics of the twin transition are enacted, negotiated, and experienced. As such, understanding the experience-technology-sustainability nexus is vital for critically engaging with the frameworks (e.g. speculative design, socio-technical imaginaries) that underpin emerging forms of value creation in the 21st century, in Finland and further afield. As the global community strives to address the Experience-Technology-Sustainability Nexus, this Special Issue aims to spark academic debate on critical perspectives that address one or more of the interfaces between experience-technology-sustainability. 

We invite both empirical and theoretical contributions, including case studies, conceptual papers, reviews, and methodological innovations. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: 

• Responsible tourism experiences 
• Technology-mediated experiences 
• Experience-centred design and sustainable innovation 
• Digital platforms and immersive environments 
• Smart tourism and the ethics of automated experiences 
• Storytelling, authenticity, and sustainability in digital experiences 
• Post-human approaches to tourism experiences 
• Sociomaterial and affective dimensions of experiences 
• Participatory design and innovation at the technology-sustainability interface 
• AI, datafication, and personalization in sustainable experience systems 
• Speculative design, socio-technical imaginaries and future scenarios

Submission instructions 

Submission deadline: accepting submissions of completed manuscripts until 3rd August 2025 

Publication: December 2025  

Researchers who are interested are strongly encouraged to submit their papers for consideration, and they are welcome to send their submission earlier than the deadline. Submissions are welcome in Finnish, Swedish or English.
